After 223 agonising days, Minnesota Vikings football is back. With a new general manager at the helm, the Norsemen have been working hard to put together a roster for the 2026 season via the draft and free agency. This weekend’s preseason opener away to the New York Giants will be the first true test of the team’s newest potential stars, as well as a first outing for our newly named QB1, Kyler Murray.
It’s unlikely most of the starters will see more than a couple of series, but Kevin O’Connell will want to see Murray taking competitive snaps in his new role, though he has said both Murray and McCarthy will see the field on Saturday. Quarterback isn’t the only position worth monitoring, though: there are still question marks over the pass rush, and rookies Demond Claiborne and Charles Demmings will be looking to prove they’re not limited to making splashy plays in camp.

What uniforms are the Vikings wearing against the Giants?
As the road team, the Vikings will likely wear their white uniforms against the Giants, who are expected to wear their traditional home uniforms of royal blue jerseys, white pants and blue socks. Along with their white jerseys, the Vikings will wear purple pants and white socks.
Ones to watch
The Vikings’ offensive depth chart is pretty much set, even this early in camp, but one position battle to keep an eye on will be for the third running back spot. Aaron Jones and Jordan Mason have been named co-RB1s, but behind them are Zavier Scott and sixth-round rookie Demond Claiborne. It’s likely that only one of them will make the final 53-man roster, so both will be hoping to stake an early claim in New York on Saturday. Second-year WR Tai Felton has also been making some eye-catching plays in camp so far; he’s been listed behind Justin Jefferson as the X receiver on the unofficial depth chart, but will need to justify that by performing in an actual game.
The defensive side of things is much more up-in-the-air, especially on the defensive line, where first-round rookie Caleb Banks and third-rounder Domonique Orange were both listed as second-stringers in the unofficial depth chart that came out on Wednesday. It’s likely just their relative inexperience that saw them listed behind the likes of Levi Drake Rodriguez and Tyrion Ingram-Dawkins, but good showings in preseason could see them reach the starting line-up by week 1. Meanwhile, like Felton on offense, rookie cornerback Charles Demmings has been wowing observers in camp and will be under the microscope to see if he can do the same against the Giants.
Previous meetings
The Vikings and Giants have faced off 33 times in competitive games, but this will be their first preseason clash since 1999, when the Giants came out on top 36–21 at the Metrodome. Before that, the two teams had only had five preseason encounters, all between 1963 and 1969. The Giants’ only victory in that span was in the only game they hosted, a 21–3 win in New Haven, Connecticut.
In competitive games, the Vikings have won six of the last seven meetings, dating back to December 2015. The only loss was in the playoffs at the end of the 2022 season, when the Giants came out on top 31–24. The Vikings have also won five of their last six road games against the G-Men, a run going back to 2005.
